Statement: 30 by 30 Alliance welcomes WA’s conservation achievements

Jason Lyddieth, National Protected Areas Campaign Manager, Pew Charitable Trusts:

“The boost of national parks across important biodiverse areas in WA is a significant and welcome contribution towards Australia’s goal of protecting 30% of our lands by 2030. Joint-management efforts here set a national standard and will have lasting benefits for people and nature.

“It’s essential these efforts are supported and built upon at a federal level. Claims the Federal Government will ‘lead the way’ for Australia is missing the crucial piece – funding. The government needs to walk its own talk when it comes to nature protection.

With just 0.1% of federal spending on protecting Australia’s unique and vulnerable nature, we’re far from preventing extinctions or meeting our 30 by 30 commitments.

Australia must conserve an additional 60 million hectares by 2030 to protect wildlife, tackle climate change, and secure clean air and water for future generations. This goal is within reach—if we invest adequately.”
