30 by 30 is the best news for the planet you haven’t heard of!

It’s a global promise where countries have pledged to ensure 30% of the Earth’s lands and seas are safe by 2030. This is the planet’s best chance of saving nature so people and wildlife have a good future.

30 by 30 is a big deal all over the world and almost 200 countries have signed on.

What’s exciting is Australia can really help out, because we Aussies love our nature, we want to keep it safe and we know what we’re doing when it comes to protecting it. We can show everyone else how it’s done!

Why do we need 30 by 30?

Australia’s nature is struggling for a few reasons including habitat loss, bushfires and invasive species. Sadly, we have the highest rate of mammal extinctions in the world.

But protecting nature in National Parks and other areas is one of the best ways to keep all life safe and healthy. It also ensures we have fresh air and water to support healthy communities.

How do we do we get to 30 by 30?

30 by 30 was supported by the Morrison Government and pledged by the Albanese Government. All states and territories have signed up too which is something to celebrate. But there’s still a long journey ahead.

We need to make sure the politicians keep their promises and do this right.

Here’s the principles we’re standing up for:

Using science to ensure the right places are protected

We need to be smart about what we protect. It’s easy to just protect big areas of land such as deserts, but that won’t stop all our animals and plants from disappearing or help protect our fresh air and water. We need to use science to make sure we’re protecting regions that take care of all the different types of nature we have. Science can also help to make sure these places are connected so animals and plants can survive climate change better.

Investing in more National Parks and protected areas

Australians love our national parks! But it’s not enough to just say an area is protected; we need to take care of it and manage threats like bushfires and invasive species. We also want local communities and visitors to access and enjoy National Parks too. This takes money to do a good job that benefits people and nature over time.

Supporting First Nations conservation

We’re home to the world’s longest continuous culture. With tens of thousands of years of traditional knowledge, First Nations people know how best to care for Country – and that’s knowledge that we desperately need, to protect nature for future generations. We respect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and believe that Traditional Owners should have a fair say on what happens to their Country. There’s still plenty we can learn and do better as we all work together to get good results for nature and people.

To make 30 by 30 happen, countries, local communities, businesses, and everyone need to work together to make sure the diversity of life on Earth can be protected forever.

What can you do? Show your support for 30 by 30 so we can make it happen!
